If you’ve started shopping for a diamond, you’ve almost certainly come across the 4 Cs: Carat, Cut, Colour and Clarity. They’re the universal shorthand for describing a diamond’s characteristics, but there’s a common misconception that all four deserve equal attention — and equal chunks of your budget.
They don’t.
Many first-time buyers naturally focus on carat size or chase extremely high clarity grades. But paying more for a technically “flawless” diamond doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll get a more beautiful diamond. In fact, some of the differences you’re paying for can only be seen under magnification.
So, which C should be at the top of your list?
Cut: The C You Can Actually See
If you want that bright, lively sparkle most people associate with a beautiful diamond, Cut should be your priority.
A well-cut diamond is precisely proportioned to control how light travels through the stone. Light enters through the top, reflects internally between the diamond’s facets and is directed back towards your eye. This is what creates that combination of brightness, fire and sparkle.
With a poorly cut diamond, more of that light leaks through the sides or bottom instead of returning through the top. The result? Even a large, high-colour, high-clarity diamond can look comparatively dull.
An Excellent or Ideal cut can therefore make a huge visual difference.
This is also where smart buyers can make their budget work harder. A beautifully cut diamond with a slightly lower colour or clarity grade can apear brighter and more impressive than a more expensive stone with exceptional specifications on paper but inferior proportions.
Cut can even influence how large a diamond appears. Good proportions and strong light return help define the stone from edge to edge, giving it greater visual presence.
Meanwhile, clarity is an area where buyers can easily spend money on something they simply cannot see. Moving from an eye-clean VS2 diamond to a much higher clarity grade might substantially increase the price, while making virtually no visible difference without magnification.

So, How Should You Prioritise the 4 Cs?
For many buyers, a sensible starting point is:
Cut: Prioritise Excellent or Ideal
Clarity: Consider VS2 or an eye-clean SI1
Colour: G or H can offer excellent value
Carat: Choose the size that works comfortably within your remaining budget
These aren’t hard rules — every diamond should be considered individually — but they’re a useful way to avoid paying a premium for specifications that may have very little impact on what you actually see.
The goal isn’t necessarily to buy the diamond with the highest grades. It’s to find the diamond that looks exceptional for your budget.
